Treasury Yields Skyrocket - Follow Up

In a 2003 paper (New Evidence on the Interest Rate Effects of Budget Deficits and Debt), Thomas Laubach, the US Federal Reserve’s senior economist, calculated the impact on long-term interest rates of rising fiscal deficits and soaring national debt. Applying his assumptions to the recent spike in the US fiscal deficit and national debt, 10 year bond rates will double from their current 3.5%.

The U.S. title-insurance industry faces increasing pressure from regulators to justify the fees charged to consumers for ensuring they have clear ownership of their homes, Title insurance can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars!

So here is what you do. Early in the process of buying a home or refinancing, let your real-estate agent and lender know you will select your own title insurer. Research title-insurance costs online and check whether there are fees on top of the premium (in many states, consumers pay separate fees to the agents for that research, on top of the premiums).

Wall Street Unspun is Peter Schiff's mid-week market outlook. It streams on Wednesday nights form 7pm - 8pm central time. Here is the link to the archived radio shows.

Another site I often look at is Shadow Government Statistics.. The charts show much higher inflation, a lower GDP, and a dollar that has fallen more than reported.

While these sites provide the free information that I’ve linked to, they also require significant monetary investments for investment advice or data sets. So why not get the same info for $3?

Where Should I Put My Money?

I’ve sold my gold position once gold crossed $900 an ounce. I use ticker symbol DGP for my gold purchases. I probably got out too soon, but I think the falling US dollar and hyperinflation are still at least 5 months away.

Another vehicle I use is the Ultra Short Lehman 20+ Treasury ProShares (ticker symbol TBT). It is a bet that long bonds will offer higher yields in the future. It has had a +40% run over 6 weeks, so look for pull backs to the $45-$46 range. Since the Fed can’t lower rates any more, this should still be a good play going forward.
